Estimation of gestational age by fetal kidney length and its correlation with gestational age measured by femur length standard biometric parameters and last menstrual period

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the utility of fetal kidney length (FKL) as a parameter for estimating gestational age (GA) using ultrasonography between 20 and 40 weeks of gestation.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was performed at the diagnostic radiology department, Combined Military Hospital, Gujranwala, Pakistan from June 2024 to November 2024. A total of 136 healthy women aged 18-40 years, with uncomplicated singleton pregnancy of gestational age between 20th to 40th week were included. Sonographic valuation was performed in all women and GA was measured as number of weeks since the 1st day of the last menstrual period (LMP). Differences between quantitative data were compared utilizing paired sample t-test. Correlation analysis was performed applying Pearson’s correlation.
Results: Mean age of women was 25.29±4.69 years. Ninety-four (69.1%) women were evaluated during 3rd trimester. GA measured by FKL (right) had a very strong correlation with GA measure by LMP (r=0.992, p<0.001). GA measured by FKL (left) had a very strong correlation with GA measured by LMP (r=0.990, p<0.001). Quantitative evaluation across various methods of GA measurements showed that there were no statistically significant differences between GA measured by LMP and FL (p=0.948), LMP and FKL (right) (p=0.676), LMP and FKL (left) (p=0.956).
Conclusion: This study demonstrates that FKL is a reliable and accurate parameter for estimating GA, showing a very strong correlation with GA measured by LMP.
