Diabetes mellitus: Recent trends and advances in the management

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus has reached critical global proportions, currently affecting an estimated 589 million people, approximately one in eight worldwide. This burden is further compounded by 635 million individuals with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and 488 million with impaired fasting glucose (IFG). By 2050, the global diabetic population is projected to rise by 45%, reaching 852.5 million.
South-East Asia sits at the heart of this escalating crisis, with a predicted 73% increase in prevalence by 2050. Worryingly, four in five diabetics remain undiagnosed, and one in four adults already lives with the condition. This silent epidemic poses a threat to both public health infrastructure and regional economic productivity.
