Abstract
Objectives: To compare the frequency of contrast induced nephropathy in patients undergoing Emergency vs. elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
Methodology: This comparative cross sectional study was performed at Cardiology Department Hayat Abad Medical complex, Peshawar, Pakistan from July 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015. Contrast induced nephropathy (CIN) was defined as increase in serum creatinin of 25% or more from the baseline and/or an absolute increase of 0.5 mg/dl or more from baseline value. Data was analyzed using SPSS version-15.
Results: We studied 280 patients with mean age of 55.16±9.97 years and 65% were male. Frequency of CIN was 10%. We found that CIN in 22 patients out of 171 patients in whom emergency PCI was done as compared to 6 patients out of 109 patients in whom PCI was done as elective procedure for chronic stable angina (P<0.003).
Conclusion: Contrast induced nephropathy was more common when PCI was done in acute coronary syndrome as compared to PCI in chronic stable angina.

Key words: Acute renal failure, PCI, CIN, ACS, STEMI, NSTEMI, USA
