Morphological patterns of endometrial biopsies for abnormal uterine bleeding at a tertiary care center

Abstract
Objectives: To determine the types and frequencies of different histomorphological patterns in in women presenting with abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) according to different age groups.
Methodology: This study was conducted at the Dow Diagnostics Reference& Research Laboratory, Dow University Health Sciences, Karachi, Pakistan. A total of 750 endometrial biopsies were examined, which were submitted with a clinical history of AUB. The histological diagnosis was rendered by two consultant histopathologists.
Results: The age of the patients ranged from 18 to 77 years (mean 38). Highest number of patients (36%) with AUB presented in age group 31-40 years. The most commonly seen organic lesions were pregnancy related, accounting for 146 (19.4 %) cases , whereas endometrial polyp was the commonest pathology in older age group. More than 40% of the cases showed organic lesions rendering endometrial biopsy as an important diagnostic tool.
Conclusion: The dilatation &curettage with biopsy is an appropriate approach in the evaluation of AUB, as significant number of cases showed pathology. Determination of exact lesion is important for appropriate therapy, which can be planned accordingly.
