Clinical profile of ophthalmic medicolegal cases presenting to a tertiary care hospital

Abstract
Objective: To study the ocular involvement and demographics of medicolegal cases presenting to a tertiary care hospital.
Methodology: This Retrospective study was conducted at Lahore General Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan from March 1, 2017 to October 30, 2018. Ethical approval of study was obtained from the Ethical Review Board of hospital. The record files and data of medicolegal cases presenting during the study period were analyzed. The demographic data i.e. age, gender and involvement
of eye was recorded in addition to the visual acuity at presentation. The ocular
injuries were categorized either as Open or Closed globe injuries. Data were
analyzed on SPSS version 20.
Results: Out of 40 patients, 65% were male with predominant involvement of right
Eye (40%). Age was between 21-30 years. Closed globe injury (92.5%) was more
common as compared to open globe injury (7.5%) and involved the eyelid (47.5%) in most
instances. Some of the patients had an unremarkable ophthalmic examination which comprised
15% of the total cases.
Conclusion: Ophthalmic medicolegal cases are not uncommon to come across in clinical practice, which mostly involve the eye lids.
