Impact of perceived level of stress among post stroke patients

Abstract
Objective: To measure the level of stress in patients suffering from stroke.
Methodology: This cross sectional study was conducted in different hospitals and clinics of Karachi and we used Non-probability convenient sampling technique. The Episize calculator was used for estimation of sample size. The subjects of both genders, living with stroke from one year in age range of 48-73 years were included, while subjects with recurrent stroke, taking anti-depressants, and cognitive/language disorders were excluded. The perceived stress scale was used for the assessment of stress. The data were analyzed using SPSS 22.
Results: Out of 100 patients, 68 were female and 32 male with mean age of 65.29+3.45 years. Most participants were from middle (45%) and lower class (44%) and having BMI category of overweight (56%) and obese (17%). A very small number (8%) showed often upset while 65% showed fairly often upset response and 23% showed that they were upset sometimes. We found that 68% who marked fairly often, showed that they were unable to control important things in life.
Conclusion: The level of perceived stress was found high among stroke patients, where 21% had moderate and 77% had high level of stress.
